There is a difference between knowing people in business and being part of a business community.

A network can give you contacts. A strong community gives you regular access to people who are building, solving problems, making decisions and navigating many of the same challenges you are.

That was something we were reminded of at the Riva Offices Golf Day 2026, where members, partners and businesses from across the Gold Coast came together for a day on the course.

While golf brought everyone together, the conversations and introductions that happened along the way were just as valuable. Members who might usually only cross paths briefly at Riva suddenly had several hours together, while others found themselves speaking with businesses and people they may never have met during an ordinary working day.

And that is where the real value of a business community often sits.

The best networking often does not feel like networking

When we think about business networking, we often think about introductions, exchanging details and trying to make the right connections.

But some of the most valuable relationships develop much more naturally.

You might speak to someone over coffee several times before you ever talk about business. Over time, you learn what they do, what they are good at and the kinds of people they work with. There is no pitch and no expectation that something needs to come from the conversation.

What you are building is familiarity.

Then, months later, when someone asks if you know a great accountant, lawyer, designer, adviser or supplier, there is already someone who comes to mind.

That is one of the differences between having a network and being part of a community. You are not constantly trying to create connections. You are regularly around people long enough for genuine relationships to develop.

It is easy to become absorbed in your own business, role or industry.

You work with the same team, solve similar problems and naturally start to see things through the same lens.

A conversation with someone from another industry can introduce a completely different way of approaching a problem. A founder might share what they learned while growing a team. Someone in marketing might hear how another sector is responding to changing customer behaviour. An employee might find themselves speaking with a business owner or leader they would rarely meet in a traditional workplace.

You are not necessarily looking for advice.

You are simply being exposed to more ideas, experiences and ways of thinking. Over time, that can influence the way you approach your own work.

There is value, too, in simply being around people who care about what they are building. Hearing what others are working towards, the challenges they are solving and what they are planning next can be enough to shift your own perspective.
