Conversations around relationships are often more complex than they appear on the surface. In this episode of the Inside Riva Podcast, Sophie speaks with Couples and Sex Therapist Pam Chetty, about connection, communication and intimacy.
With a calm and considered approach, Pam shares what she sees in her work with couples, offering insight into the patterns, challenges and small shifts that can reshape the way people relate to each other.

A Journey Across Continents and Cultures
Pam’s story begins in South Africa, where she was born during apartheid. Education became a central part of her path early on, opening doors that shaped the direction of her career.
After receiving a scholarship, she moved into teaching, starting with English and music. It wasn’t something she had originally set out to do, but it led her into working more closely with people and their everyday experiences.
Over time, that work shifted into school counselling. Across roles in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, she began to notice the quieter challenges many individuals and families carry. Those experiences would later shape her focus on relationships and intimacy.
A Path into Counselling
Over time, Pam’s work began to move beyond the classroom and into counselling. What started as a natural extension of her role in schools gradually became a clearer direction.
After relocating to Australia, she began building her private practice alongside full-time work. It was a period of balance, managing both the stability of her role and the early stages of something more independent.
That transition didn’t happen all at once, but it marked a shift in focus. Her work became more centred on supporting individuals and couples, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become her full-time practice.
Building Bridges in Relationships
Pam's work is deeply rooted in creating a judgment-free space where couples can explore the intricacies of their relationships. In her practice, she emphasises the importance of understanding both the emotional and physical dimensions of intimacy. By offering tools and frameworks for open communication, Pamela helps couples navigate the complexities of their relationships, moving from a place of disconnection to one of mutual understanding and collaboration.
Addressing Unspoken Barriers
A big part of Pam’s work sits in the conversations that don’t usually happen. Topics around intimacy are often left unspoken, shaped by upbringing, assumptions or simply not knowing how to begin.
In her sessions, the focus is on creating enough safety for those conversations to take place. It’s less about having the right answers and more about finding the language to express what often goes unsaid.
From there, things begin to shift. When people feel heard without judgement, it becomes easier to approach vulnerability with more openness and understanding.
The Pressure on Modern Relationships
Pam often sees how modern relationships are shaped by a mix of openness and pressure. There’s more space today to talk about mental health and emotional needs, but with that has come a growing set of expectations.
For many couples, there’s a sense of needing to be everything for one another. Over time, that pressure can create distance rather than connection.
She believes the shift comes from bringing things back to what matters. Rather than striving for perfection, the focus becomes more about being intentional in how people show up in their relationships.
A More Intentional Way Forward
One of the ideas that comes through clearly in Pam’s work is that connection doesn’t happen by chance. It’s something that builds over time, through communication, awareness and small, consistent efforts.
It’s not about getting everything right, but about staying engaged in the process. Often, it’s the smaller moments that shape a relationship more than the bigger ones.
At its core, her work is a reminder that relationships evolve. With the right level of attention and intention, they can shift in meaningful ways.
